Rhapsody – Ascending to Infinity

Last year, Rhapsody of Fire announced they were to split and that Alex Staropoli would continue under the Rhapsody of fire name, while Luca Turilli would be forming a band under the Rhapsody name. Rhapsody was the original name for Rhapsody of fire until legal issues forced the name change, so for Luca Turilli the new band is a return to the Rhapsody name.
The split was announced in August 2011 and Luca spent the next few months writing the debut Rhapsody album, and the results are here – and what an album it is.

Brief comments on a couple of tracks..

Title track ”Ascending to infinity” starts with plenty of guitars, and is a great power metal song. The choral backing vocals plus the orchestra give it a very rich sound but don’t detract from the fact that this is primarily a guitar driven track.

The final track on the album, ”Of Michael the archangel and Lucifers fall” is a sixteen minute epic of a track that feels like a mini album all of its own. It’s a fantastic song, but then again so is the whole album.

The sound is epic – it’s got a real movie soundtrack feel with its powerful orchestral sound, and the blending of this with the metal sound works superbly well – its an album that all Nightwish fans really need to listen to as there is a lot in common musically between the two bands.

An excellent album that will appeal not only to fans of Rhapsody in fire, but also to Nightwish fans.
