”The Kinks at the BBC” is as the name suggests, an album of material by The Kinks that has been primarily taken from the BBC archives. It’s a pretty impressive collection – Five CD’s, one DVD and a book, and at just under £40 is pretty good value when you look how much is included.
The collection was put together from the BBC archive material and also by inviting contributions from fans. The BBC often used to wipe tapes after they were broadcast which has meant that many classic programmes were lost for ever. However, thanks to fans recording broadcasts at home a lot of gems have been reclaimed here for this set.
The collection spans a long period of time – from 1964 to 1977 (plus a few bits from 1994) and includes interviews as well as live performances. One thing that annoys me on compilations like this is the way the interviews are mixed in with the music. If they’d been put on a separate disc then people could listen to them once then file the disc away – after all most people arent going to want to listen to an interview repeatedly, whereas the music is good enough that you can listen to it again and again. That’s the biggest problem with this collection for me – the mixing of interviews and music.
It’s a great collection for fans of The Kinks as it really does chart the bands career with the various live shows and BBC programme appearances (Top of the pops, Old Grey Whistle Test etc) over the years. It’s also a collection that’s not just for hardcore fans – there’s plenty of stuff here that more casual fans will discover and enjoy.
Some of the material is pretty ropey quality – I’m guessing this is stuff that was recorded by people at home, rather than being the professionally recorded BBC archive material, as the vast majority of the songs I listened to are of excellent sound quality.
The difficult question – is this collection worth getting? That really depends on how much stuff you already have by The Kinks and how much of a completist you are. On the minus side its just the latest in a long line of collections (most recently The Kinks in Mono, released late last year), but on the plus side this is unusually comprehensive and covers a large part of the bands career and includes some great material. Personally I think it’s one of the better collections available and is definitely worth buying if you’re a fan of The Kinks.
‘The Kinks At The BBC’ will be released on August 13th via Universal
