Metal bands in the nineties are legion it seems, and few make a major impact on the scene. But NIGHTRAGE do, relentlessly they go their own way but still packs a punch. The phenomenon appeared over ten years ago, in 2000 to be precise, under the direction of guitarist Marios Iliopulos (and Gus G). Members have come and gone but the lineup of Marios and Olof Björck on guitars, Antony Hämäläinen on vocals, Anders Hammer on bass and drummer Jo Nunez seems stable. But the attitude of the band gets them both kudos and hardship. A no nonsense head on metal band without compromise ought to be everyone´s dream…or not? Who better to explain than Messrs. Hämäläinen and Iliopulos? Hi guys, now…

FP: What about the new album?

Interview with Nemhain singer Amber Erlandsson:

Festivalphoto: How would you describe your music for anyone who hasn’t heard anything by you yet?

Amber: How about an infernal racket or Blues stained punk rock doom…

Festivalphoto: Your excellent debut album, From the ashes came out last year. When can fans expect to see the next album – have you started work on it yet?

Amber: We certainly have started work on it, and we’re about halfway there. We’re not quite sure when we’ll record it, but we’re hoping to have it released before next year’s summer festivals so we can get out and party!

Festivalphoto: You’ve recently released a 4 track EP, ”The murder mile EP” and made it available as a free download. What made you decide to give it away for free?

Festivalphoto spoke with Matt and Joel from Evile just before their album launch party show at the Relentless Garage in London on 29/9/11

Festivalphoto: You’ve just released your new album – Five serpents teeth, which sounds great. Can you tell us a bit about the album?

Joel: It has music on it, its the third one, ten tracks, and we started writing it while we were in America actually, when we started doing it while we were on an RV bouncing around the highways of America whch was a bit uncomfortable. If anyone says to you that an RV is a good idea, don’t listen to them, it’s a very bad idea.
Matt: Yeah it came out on Monday so we’ll wait and see how all the reviews go and whether people buy it. Its gone well so far.

Festivalphoto: For anyone who isn` t familiar with Cornerstone, can you tell us a bit about the band including where are you from and when you were formed?

Steve: we have begun to perform cover-Versions of REM, SOUL ASYLUM and THE CURE in the livingroom of Mike’s former girlfriend in 1997 (*laughs*) …that was it. After a time a friend of Mike – Markus Bousska – joined the group, he has played drums, so the band was born, we have started, to write own songs. At the beginning Mike was the leadsinger, but – let me say it this way – there are some things in the band, he can do better than singing…(*laughs*).

Michael: yeah, so a singer joined the band, we have changed the name to “Cornerstone” in 1999, and started to perform...

Festivalphoto spoke with Sy Keeler and Andy Rosser-Davies from Onslaught just before their London show on their UK tour.

Festivalphoto: Earlier this year you released your latest album, Sounds of violence. Can you tell us a bit about the album?

Sy: The album in general, or the aftermath, or a bit of both? OK, the album is produced by Jacob Hansen who is a Danish gentleman and he has produced a fantastic album for us. We have how many songs on there?

Andy: Ten originals – eight songs, one outro one re-record and a cover version.

Sy: It was a great working environment – we went to Denmark to record, no distractions, the nearest bar was ten kilometres, not that we drink much anyway...

Det hårda och energi rika trash metal bandet Massdistraction tog hem segern i Unreleased och går därför vidare till finalen som äger rum i Stockholm den 17e december.

Festivalphoto:
Hur känner ni er?

Massdistraction:
Det är en väldigt skön känsla, nästan lite för bra för att vara sann.

Festivalphoto:
Hur ska ni fira detta?

Massdistraction:
Det blir en hel del alkohol hela natten lång förutom Jon (gitarristen) som ska på barnkalas dagen efter! Man måste ju föregå med gott exempel.

Festivalphoto:
Hur kommer ni att förberedda er inför finalen?

Massdistraction:
Vi kommer att försöka boka så många spelningar som möjligt så att vi får mer erfarenhet, man kan bara bli bättre och utvecklas hela tiden. Spela mycket!

Bildades 2005 och beskrevs ofta som ett lokalt funk/rock band. Under årens lopp har deras sound utvecklats till något mer unikt med tyngre riff och starkare låtar, även om deras funkiga rötter lever kvar i musiken än idag. Bandet släppte sin debutplatta nyligen och singeln ”They’ll Strike You Out” har spelats i radio runt om i världen.

Festivalphoto:
Ni har nyligen släppt er debutplatta där singeln ”They’ll strike you out” spelas runt om i världen. Hur känns det att ha gått ut såhär starkt?

Stone Antica:
Det känns naturligt. Vi har ju jobbat så hårt med allt förarbete och själva inspelningen så det vore dumt att sluta nu. Vi tänker fortsätta på samma sätt som tidiagre...

Ett nytt band med stor glädje för att spela live. Medlemmarna har erfarenhet från tidigare band så räkna med att Scandal Circus bjuder på en bra liveshow. Scandal Circus spelar tung hårdrock med oförglömliga melodier. Bandet jobbar för att skapa ett bra helhetsintryck, där musik, framförande samt utseende paketeras och levereras.

Festivalphoto:
Varför just namnet Scandal Circus? Inget illa då det är ett coolt namn men är ni fans av clowner?

Scandal Circus:
Många hårdrocksband och dylikt är det många ”scandaler” om som skrivs i tidningar osv. Det är helt enkelt ett passande namn!

Festivalphoto:
Hur går processen med första skivan? Är ni snart klara? Har ni stött på några problem som hindrat er från att bli klara?

Scandal Circus:
Vi har bara små detaljer kvar ...

Berätta lite om ert andra album NXT GEN som kommer ut nu snart? Ert debutalbum Undergrounded Universe kom som bäst på plats nummer åtta på Sverigetopplistan, kommer ni att klättra högre denna gång?

Renegade Five:
Lite högre tempo och mer energi annars känner man igen sig på R5 soundet med starka melodier. Vi har exprimenterat lite mer med bl.a en duett med Elize Ryd från gruppen Amaranthe. Vi satsar givetvis högre än förra albumet. En första plats skulle sitta fint, men det bestämmer lyssnarna!

Berätta lite om bandet för de som inte känner till er!? Medlemmar? Tidigare erfarenheter etc.?

Renegade Five:
Vi är ett gäng ursprungligen från Karlstad men, numer har vi rötter både i Karlskoga och Västerås...

Ett thrash metal band som vill återinföra rejäl metal med attityd och originalitet. De gör sin egna moderna version av thrash metal och influenserna sträcker sig från allt mellan Iron Maiden och Lamb of God. Massdistraction är just klara med en nyinspelning av förra årets EP ”Succubus” och håller nu på med en helt ny skiva med 6 nya låtar som kommer att vara färdig i höst. Bandets närmaste mål är att komma ut med sin musik till fler människor och få möjligheten att spela för en större publik.

Ni håller på att göra en ny skiva som kommer ut nu i höst! När kommer den? Vad kommer den heta och kommer den följa i samma thrash anda som Succubus?
